On September 6, 2025, the Athletics meeting took place in Wohlen/AG.
If someone had told me a few weeks ago that I would be a speaker at an Athletics meeting, I probably would have just shaken my head. But this weekend it happened: The meeting of the Disabled Sports Club Wohlen-Lenzburg took place at the Niedermatten sports facility in Wohlen – and my better half and family unceremoniously threw me in at the deep end. Suddenly I was standing there with a microphone in my hand. A request that sounded more like an order – and which, of course, I couldn’t refuse.
I admit: In the first few minutes, I felt quite lost. The venue was full of movement, voices, excitement – and I had no idea how such a meeting even worked. Terms like “transition zone” or “starting block” I only knew from television until now, and now I was supposed to talk about them live. So, I had no choice but to watch closely, improvise a little – and simply hope that everything would work out.
But after a short time, the atmosphere captivated me. Around 50 athletes competed, each with their own story, with energy, enthusiasm, and a passion that was immediately infectious. Whether in the ball throw, the 100-meter sprint, the grueling 1500-meter race, shot put, or the exciting 4×100-meter relay – emotions filled the air everywhere. The spectators clapped, cheered, and you could feel: This wasn’t just about distances and times, but about moments that touched the soul.
It was particularly moving to see the faces after crossing the finish line: sometimes sweat, sometimes exhaustion, but always pride. When a ball flew a few meters further than expected or a baton exchange was perfectly executed, the athletes beamed as if they had won the World Championship. Every small success was a huge experience – and I got to witness it all up close.
For me personally, this day was much more than just a spontaneous task. It was an experience full of enthusiasm, respect, and joy. In the end, I wasn’t just relieved that everything worked out – I was thrilled. Thrilled by the energy that filled the venue. Thrilled by the athletes who gave their all. And deeply impressed by how sport can connect people.
