Over 60 Judoka with intellectual disabilities from 7 countries will meet in Puschlav from May 28 to June 1, 2025, for a European Judo festival. The tournament is being organized by the Swiss Adaptive Judo association in collaboration with Special Olympics Switzerland and the Swiss Judo & Ju Jitsu Federation.
The Adaptive Judo Festival is taking place in Puschlav for the second time. It allows Judoka with disabilities to compete at an international level and gain visibility before a wider audience. Traditionally, however, this Judo festival is much more than just sports. The beautiful Poschiavo region is once again attracting almost 200 guests who are accompanying the Judoka. Visitors from Romania, Ireland, Estonia, Austria, Italy, and Hungary will not only create a rousing atmosphere around the competitions, but also take unforgettable excursions in the idyllic landscape.
The Swiss judokas can hardly wait for their home tournament. Lea Burkhardt, co-president of the organizing committee and athlete spokesperson, says: “I’m really looking forward to my fights and the excursions. But it’s also a special honor to welcome the athletes from other countries as the host nation.”
More than sport – an unforgettable experience for the Judoka and their accompanying fans and families
In addition to the sports competitions, the delegations can expect a varied supporting program in the picturesque surroundings of Valposchiavo. Check-in takes place on Wednesday at Punto Rosso, where participants will move into their accommodation in one of the eight hotels after accreditation. Dinner at Punto Rosso is the social meeting point for all delegations every evening. Away from the competitions, there are numerous activities: a hike to the Alp with a polysportive rally and – weather permitting – a cozy barbecue, an excursion with the Rhaetian Railway, combined with a hike through the impressive landscape, and the opportunity to get to know the TAISO sports discipline. There is also a special workshop program for the coaches. The crowning finale on Saturday evening is the traditional athlete disco – the perfect end to an intense day of competition.
Local Organizing Committee supported by Valposchiavo Turismo
Valposchiavo was chosen as the venue not only for its tourist attractions but also because the two main organizers of this great event themselves have a very close connection to this region: Mario Bontognali has family roots in Poschiavo, and his wife Cecilia Bontognali-Evenblij also feels very much at home in this place. They are actively supported by Valposchiavo Turismo.
Swiss Adaptive Judo
The Swiss Adaptive Judo association promotes Judo for children, adolescents, and adults with disabilities. It organizes and supports activities that promote friendship, solidarity, inclusion, and equality within society. Mario and Cecilia Bontognali – Evenblij form the board and have been involved in Judo for children, adolescents, and adults with special needs for more than 25 years.
Judo at Special Olympics
Judo is the only martial art at Special Olympics, and with over 200 active Judoka in Switzerland, it is a very popular discipline. An agreement has been signed with the Swiss Judo Federation to specifically support and promote the development of Judo for people with disabilities. In Switzerland, five to six Judo tournaments usually take place. The next big highlight will be the National Summer Games, which will take place in Zug in May 2026.
