A beginning that took courage
Daniel Knöpfel is from Thun – and his story is inseparably linked with Special Olympics. He has been part of the movement for more than 30 years. He experienced his first World Games back in 1995.
“You won’t get an opportunity like this again”
In 1994, Daniel heard a sentence that changed everything: “You could go to America.” It was a decision full of doubt. But the people around him encouraged him to seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Today, Daniel knows it was the right decision. All the unforgettable experiences at the Special Olympics World Winter Games, held in Connecticut in 1995, strengthened his self-confidence and motivated him to keep going in sport. Even back then, Daniel was competing as a cross-country skier. His first competition experience on the international stage.
More than competitions
For Daniel, Special Olympics means far more than sport. It’s the chance to show yourself, to prove yourself, and to be part of a strong community. He even captured his experiences in a three-page story about the origins of Special Olympics.
Beyond your own limits
For Daniel, sport means pushing beyond yourself time and again. He’s a versatile person, has tried many sports, and stays open to new things. What matters most to him is being seen – on and off the field of play.
Equal opportunities, more visibility
Daniel would like to see more spectators at competitions and more attention for Special Olympics athletes. They should have the same opportunities as everyone else. And their achievements deserve recognition.
A dream for 2029
His biggest dream is to be there at the World Winter Games Switzerland 2029 – in his own country, in front of a home crowd. A goal that, for him, symbolises hope, motivation, and togetherness.
Keep going – and say thank you
In closing, Daniel has a clear message for other athletes: “Keep at it.” He thanks Special Olympics for giving him the chance to take part in competitions and to be part of a movement that changes lives.

Facts about Daniel Knöpfel
Born in Thun, he works in the bakery at Rüttihubelbad and in a coffee bar in Bümpliz. In his free time, traveling and watching football are among his hobbies, as is writing articles for the insieme blog. He is also actively involved with the support group for Volkshochschule Plus, where he attends courses or teaches them himself. Dani is also politically interested and is part of the Forum 22 network. He is running for the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern and for the city council elections in Thun.
